Our very first ever #Blitz was held in Carlow three years ago and therefore it was fitting to start the new year with #Blitzit 2017 in Carlow. This year the event was held in IT Carlow and we were delighted to partner Carlow IT to make this happen, together with Carlow Regional Youth services who have partnered Get Going…Get Rowing from its inception in 2014. Carlow Rowing club were on board with former rowing Ireland President Anthony Dooley, Sean Jones, Peadar Doyle and Angela Keogh. A vibrant and successful day was had by all. A culmination of the work which started back in October where 36 Transition year students were trained up to become indoor rowing coaches. Carlow Youth services lead this program and do mammoth work in organising and liaising with schools. In addition they provide a second day of youth leadership which has proved to be invaluable to these young aspiring coaches.
The success in Carlow is now evident with over 24 girls transitioning to Carlow Rowing club. Many of last years participants competed at the Irish Rowing Championships last July and we look forward to next year’s TY’s being the first that will have had experienced the programme from a student and a coaching perspective. In addition the programme has stretched beyond the bounds of Carlow to Duiske, College in Kilkenny with many also transitioning to Graignamanagh Rowing club, in fact this year we may indeed see the first ever girls 8+ from Kilkenny through the help of the partnership with Carlow Youth services, Graignamanagh Rowing Club and Get Rowing.
We have lots more #Blitzit to come in 2017, including our first ever Water Blitz in Hannover Quay, Dublin…. So watch this space !
